This page conveys my opinion on the topic of abortion. If you are
offended by the Pro-Life viewpoint, do not bother reading on.
I strongly believe that most abortions are wrong. The only situation
where I believe abortion should be allowed is when the woman's life is at
risk. There must be just cause for the murder of an unborn child. If the
woman just doesn't feel like going through with the pregnancy, or suffers
mild health problems such as headaches, abdominal pain, or other such things,
it is not reason enough to kill an innocent, helpless child.
A major topic of debate is when life actually starts. Some people say
that life doesn't begin until the child is actually born, as in fully out
of the mother's body. I disagree with this. The child has a heartbeat
and brain waves at a very early stage of development. The unborn child can
feel pain and responds to various stimuli. Even at only 8 weeks after
conception, the child looks in all respects like a living, breathing
human being. It is just incredibly small.
Who are we to choose what child is to live and what child is to die? If
the biological mother cannot care for the child, then adoption is a perfectly
acceptable alternative to simply terminating the life of the baby. There are
many couples out there that are physically unable to have children of their own,
so they must resort to adoption. These thousands of children killed daily by
abortion deserve a chance at life.
I understand that going through a pregnancy can be very rough on the
mother and giving that child up can be even more difficult, but isn't it better
to let someone else care for the child, so that it can live? Abortion can be
just as harmful to the mother as going through with the pregnancy. The sites
listed at the bottom of this page give a lot of very good, but graphic
information about the reality of abortion. If your stomach can handle it, I
encrouage you to look at the pictures on these sites of these victims of
abortion, these tiny children, stripped of their lives. After looking at
those, then you try to tell me that abortion is not brutal murder and that
it is humane. I don't think you will be able to.
Milestones in Fetal Development
4-5 months: baby can kick hard enough for the mother to feel it
3 months: breathing (amniotic fluid), capable of hearing
11 weeks: has fingerprints and can kick; is sensitive to heat, touch,
light, and noise; weight is approximately 1 ounce and is 2 1/2 to 3 inches
long; the baby could fit comfortably in the palm of your hand
9 weeks: squints, swallows, moves tongue, makes fist
2 months: all body systems functioning
2 months: ultrasound has seen babies this age sucking their thumbs
40 days: brain waves can be measured with an Electronencephalogram
(Today we declare someone to be legally dead when his brain waves cease. So if the end of brainwaves marks the legal end of life, perhaps the start of brainwaves should mark the legal start of life?)
18 days: heart begins to beat
(Even today the most common way to determine that someone is dead is probably
to check for pulse or heatbeat. So if we say you're dead when your heart stops,
shouldn't we say you're alive when you're heart starts?
